VERA SCHOOLS
FOR TAILORING AND SEWING
Saad Zaghloul st, Alexandria ,building number 43 "Sokkar building"
Sokkar building is an administrative building containing offices of 2 rooms and sometimes of only one room of companies, small laboratories, lens maker, tailors, clinics...etc.
Building entrance has a reception counter: not clean, neglected with no one sitting behind anymore.
A large sign under a window of the 3rd floor :" Ecoles Vera Coupe-Couture" " vera schools for tailoring and sewing"
Let's go up to the 3rd floor on the building spiral staircase.
A sign on the school door with the owner name written on it "Skeuhi Zareh Metavian" the syllable "yan" at the end of the name indicated that the owner is Armenian.
Besides the owner name, we find a list of enrollment terms which is more of a bylaw for students, teachers and teaching system written in Arabic , most of those conditions are still working till this day after 66 years of founding the school as it is written at the end of the list "Vera schools founded 1950 and welcome every student who wants to learn the art of tailoring and sewing" unless only one term which is that students now buy their own tools and the fees don't include this anymore.
In the entrance a Certificate in French on the wall from Dydou Academy 12 Lafayette st, paris saying that madame "Skeuhi Metavian" obtained her diploma in tailoring and now has the title of "tailoring teacher" the certificate is signed by MR Daydou the head teacher in 1943.
I knew about the shool from a relative who there her tailoring classes in 1990s whose her mother was graduated form the same school in 1950s.
The sign says "Vera Schools" not "school" because madame Vera founded five schools four in Cairo and one in Alexandria.
Till the last year three of them were still working, Nozha and Quobba branches in Cairo and Ramleh station in Alexandria.
The teaching system has been always the same and didn't change over years: Classes takes 7 months , each level takes one month from the most simple to the most complicated sewing patterns, the same lessons order is followed.
The school has a license and a stamp which helps graduates to work in ready-made clothing factories and to open their own factories.
The school used to have a correspondence study system .
Madam Vera Skeuhi Metavian was an Armenian Egyptian who used to live Cairo who took a diploma to teach tailoring. In 1950 she founded her own method and school ,she obtained a patent for her sewing patterns and her method so other schools couldn't use her method which made her schools reputable from early 50s to late 90s.
Mrs Vera immigrated to the United States with her son leaving the schools administration to the some of her teachers, The Alexandrian branch is the responsibility of Mrs. Amal who says she never saw Mrs.Vera because when she started working in the school Mrs.Vera had already immigrated and she knew from her daughter in law the death of Mrs.Vera but she doesn't know exactly when.
Mrs Amal now contacts Mrs Vera daughter in law through internet because she stopped visiting Egypt after the revolution of 25th January 2011 and her last visit to Alexandria was in winter 2010.
The school is deteriorating because according to the teachers words the daughter-in-law doesn't understand the value of the school and doesn't respect their history ,so she doesn't give enough attention , she stopped the advertises in newspapers and magazines and she doesn't repair or buy an alternative to what is broken.
People started to forget about the schools and some of them get surprised when they know that three of the five branches are still open.
The school in Alexandria is a two-rooms appartment, the first room contains two rectangular tables and some chairs, a long mirror, a showcase containing some small-sized dresses ,obviously those dresses have been there for a long time ,indicating the dust on them.
A very old torn mannequin
The second room is the administration room where there are cupboards to reserve paper : financial files, students' files , method and small notebooks, some of the cupboards with taken-off doors, an old iron-made Singer sewing machine which stopped working years ago, a rectangular table.
Another big showcase where more old designs are displayed.
Teachers are proud that Fathi Khalil -the author of the famous encyclopedia about clothes making that was published in the 1990s under the name "The basis in clothes making" and the owner of Venus Magazine for fashion designs and sewing patterns - studied in Alexandria branch of Vera school.
which lead to a misunderstanding among the readers of Venus magazine as they thought that it was published by Vera school.

*Last year Mrs Vera daughter-in-law offered for sale the Nozha branch in Cairo with its license and the teaching method, which turned the teachers in Alexandria branch angry because she gave up the method that was being only taught at their schools.
-Now Alexandria branch is threatened to be closed because the building owner sued the current tenant of the school apartment who is Mrs Vera only son arguing that he doesn't live in Alexandria anymore and so he doesn't use the apartment himself.
the teachers went to a lawyer who said lately that the building owner situation in the case is stronger than they think because Mrs Vera's only son doesn't want to come back to Alexandria even for a while to solve this problem.
